Painted Baby
Circuses scare me. Carnies scare me. Gypsies scare me. Why is it that these wandering, modern-day-nomads frighten me so? Is it that I moved many, many times in my life and these groups symbolize that uprooting to me? Is it that their tight-knit communities are exclusive and I feel shut out? Could it be that they have been the subject of too many a disturbing movie or TV show?
Now, I know circuses scare me because they have clowns. I guess I have coulrophobia (fear of clowns). Their painted faces obscure my ability to read what they are thinking. Masks affect me the same way. I didn't realize though, that the fear of clowns was so common. Why in the world are they so popular at kids parties?

Postscript: This is the cutest baby ever! Look for pictures of her in all her glory later. She's a beautiful girl, I am sorry she made me think of clowns.

Gee, thanks, Kiki. Take a picture of my beautiful daughter and turn it into an essay about something that SCARES you?!?!?!?!? You're never gettin' another picture out of me, woman.
(And here I was thinking the picture was funny, since she was getting ready to be a LADYBUG last Halloween... photo ruin-er...)
LOLOLOLOLOL!!!
Aw, Hamster---she's beautiful anyway!
I think clowns are so popular at kids parties (and with kids in general) because they are adults who are completely uninhibited. Kids must get tired of being surrounded by adults who play by the rules, set the rules, act stiff all day long, and follow the norms of society. How wonderful to see a big person who paints their face, wears crazy clothes, embraces slapstick humor, and just lets themself go just like kids do? Maybe the adults who are freaked out by clowns are those less comfortable with that out of control feeling...
Don't you love it when I psychoanalyze you, K?
Well, my mom was a clown. And a belly dancer. And a hot air balloon manager. Guess she was an "uninhibited adult".
And since I don't mind squawking like a chicken for an enthusiastic rendition of "Old Mac Donald", or sobbing loudly and dramatically in the role of Mama Duck in "Five Little Ducks", she must have passed it on to me. Haha. Must be why kids adore me.
Better go find my red rubber nose to achieve complete domination over the world... I'll fascinate some, and terrorize others. How can I lose? :)
